New OSCAR Franchise in the Spotlight: John Simms
New OSCAR Franchisee in the Spotlight
Oscar Franchisee: John Simms
Which area does your OSCAR business cover?
Grassmoor / North Wingfield / Clay Coss / Pilsley
What was your career before OSCAR?
A shop and awnings manager in the caravan trade, since 2007. Previously (from 1987 to 2001) I worked in the cycle trade progressing from part-time boy to shop manager. Also a couple of jobs in the motor trade.
What made you decide on a career change to run your own OSCAR Business?
I felt I had gone as far as I could in my current job. I didn't want to get another job and end up in the same position in five years. This seemed a way to get further up the ladder and also more rewarding. Also to be in control of your own destiny!
What was it that made you choose an OSCAR franchise business?
The further the process went the more interested I became, which ultimately led to the purchase. The amount of back up supplied, and the training, really attracted me.
What has been your favourite part of your OSCAR training so far?
Understanding what goes in to some food is interesting, and partly shocking. The DISC part I found weirdly accurate. But one thing I have found is how helpful and friendly everyone is, whether it's head office staff or other franchisees.
What pets do you have?
Misty, a six-year-old West Highland Terrier and Ellie, a four-year-old Cairn Terrier.
Which OSCAR food do you feed your pet?
Lamb & Rice and loved it.
What is your pet's favourite game to play and why?
Misty has a rope toy she loves to play fetch with, unfortunately Ellie barks non-stop when we do! Ellie loves the chewy toy bones, she will gnaw away at them for ages.
Tell us a funny tale about your pet
Ellie barks at the dogs on the TV, and when they disappear off the side of the screen, she waits for them to appear in the room. Bizarrely, the only other animal she does this with is a polar bear!
If you could be any pet, what would you be and why?
It's got to be a dog – just eat, sleep and play – sounds like heaven!
