- The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a member of the gundog group. The Toller was bred to retrieve from cold waters and must have a water-repellent double coat of medium length and softness, and a soft dense undercoat. The coat may have a slight wave on the back, but is otherwise straight. Some winter coats may form a long loose curl at the throat. They also have webbed feet.

- The Toller is not a difficult dog to train as it is highly intelligent and a fast learner that likes to work for its owner. They also seem to show a talent for tracking and obedience.
- Temperament
- The Toller is an intelligent dog, which gets on well with children and enjoys being outdoors.They are ideally suited to the active country living family. They should be socialised from an early age. They are not known to be aggressive dogs.
