Helpline Advice: Colitis
What is Colitis?
Colitis is an inflammation of the colon, reducing its ability to absorb water. This results in a dog or cat developing watery stools with some mucus and blood. The watery stools may have an unpleasant odour and you may find your pet develops flatulence and strains to pass their stools.
If your dog or cat displays any of the symptoms associated with colitis, it is important to take them to the vet for a health check.
Why do dogs and cats develop Colitis?
There are many different causes of colitis. Here are some examples:
- Dietary intolerance
- Bacterial infection
- Parasitic infection
- Stress and anxiety
- Ingestion of a foreign body
Some dog breeds are more prone to developing dietary intolerances which can lead to colitis, such as German Shepherds, Boxers and Retrievers. For some dogs colitis may be caused by a food allergy or intolerance, particularly to cereals with gluten in them, such as wheat and maize, or to the heavier, less digestible red meats, such as beef.
How can OSCAR help?A dog suffering with colitis should be fed little and often using a sensitive grain free recipe such as OSCAR Adult Complete Turkey & Potato, OSCAR Adult Complete Fresh Salmon, or OSCAR Adult Complete Sensitive.
