Every year, the second Sunday in September marks National Pet Memorial Day. On this day, pet owners take the time to remember their pets, and to share the important part that they played in their lives.

Social media is one of the most popular ways to do this; it is often done by posting a favourite picture (or collage of pictures) using the following hashtag: #NationalPetMemorialDay.

Another popular tradition on National Pet Memorial Day is to plant a tree or shrub in memory of your beloved pet. Alternatively, you might like to volunteer at an animal-based charity or perhaps consider making a donation; this option can be as simple as giving away dog toys such as balls and Frisbees at the local park for other dogs to play with.

Remembering a pet can be difficult and sad, no matter how much time has passed since losing them, so make sure you take time to do some of the things that your pet was fond of such as going on their favourite walk, or visiting a park that they enjoyed playing in. It's important to reflect on the happy times that you and your pet shared together.
