Owning pets is great! Whether you own a dog or a cat, most people share a bond with their pets that can be as intense as the relationships they share with their friends or family. Knowing that you've got your furry best friend to come home to at the end of a long day of work can boost your mood and make you feel happier.

Benefits of owning a pet

Believe it or not, there are other benefits that come with owning a pet that you may not realise. From reducing stress to keeping you fit, owning a pet can have lasting effects on your well-being. While people aren't always there when you need them, your pet will be! Pets can provide support because they are always available to listen, which can be great after a rough day.

The responsibility of owning a pet

No matter what type of pet you get, you will have to take care of it. Being responsible for another living being can teach you skills that will be helpful throughout your life and can even give some people a sense of purpose that they have never had before.

Owning a pet can also be good for teaching compassion. The experience of being fully responsible for a pet’s health and happiness often results in you feeling a new sense of compassion as you are forced to look beyond your own wants and needs in order to focus on theirs, as well as making sure that their wants and needs are being fulfilled. For example, you might want to stay in all weekend binge watching your favourite show, but your dog might be desperate to go out for a walk and burn off some energy. This ability to put others before yourself extends to the people closest to you and can make you feel less stressed, and more aware of other people's feelings.

So, whether you own a dog or a cat, it's clear that owning any pet can be a great thing! From health benefits to mental benefits they make a great addition to your life. But remember to think carefully, and don't decide to bring one into your life until you are certain you can properly take care of them.
